Traveling to Vegas for a conference annually and at least 2 to 3 times a year since 1994, I was totally OK with NOT going this year. There were no major product announcements from camera makers and I could (totally) use a break from Vegas. In case you missed it, last year David and I watched a 4-alarm fire on the strip. While it seems all CES has to offer is a speakerbox that talks to the clouds, Nikon and Panasonic did have press events. I like those guys too. The main thing at CES this year is that the products announced at Photokina were finally shown. But because cameras for most pros aren’t just “consumer electronics” and it’s not an Olympic year, we didn’t see much new.
Back to Panasonic, the Lumix GH5 is the first mirrorless cameras to deliver 4K 60p/50p video recording on a digital single lens mirrorless camera. It includes a 6K Photo feature that allows a photographer to grab an 18-megapixel image from the ultra-high-quality video. Interesting they’re marketing that, because that’s how all mirrorless cameras work. You’re grabbing a still from a video recorder….. And, in this instance, from a micro fourth thirds sensor.
