As we get closer to the launch of the a7RII, we’re starting to see a trickle of information on the new camera and its performance with third-party lenses. Sony claimed during their press launch that the a7RII would be able to focus with third-party lenses like those from Canon as quickly as with their own lenses. The Sony A7RII autofocus speed with Canon lenses shown in video samples from someone named Lucas Kurt has A7RII focusing with a Canon 40mm STM lens using an Metabones EF-E mount adapter. True to Sony’s word, the focus speed (in this limited test) is indeed fast.
The video shows a more powerful Canon lens in the distance, we’re not sure why they didn’t use that lens for the test, hopefully other videos will surface. We’re also not sure who Lucas Kurt is, and how he scored a pre-production a7RII, as he’s never posted a YouTube video before.
The video shows the Canon lens on the a7RII using AF-S and AF-C modes and does a great job of tracking the stationary objects in the test. We’re looking forward to seeing moving objets being tracked.
