Sony Releases Full-Frame FE 50mm F2.8 Macro Lens

Today Sony released a lightweight and compact standard 50mm F2.8 macro prime lens (model SEL50M28) that offers versatile shooting experience. The announcements follows the 50mm F1.4 Lens and 70-200mm F2.8. According to Sony, the FE 50mm F2.8 Macro lens, is “Ideal for everyday photography with outstanding image quality and bokeh; while its 1:1 macro allows sharp close-up shots.” Sony’s prime also features a comprehensive range of controls including focus-mode switch, focus-range limiter, and a focus-hold button.

Compared to longer focal-length macro lenses, the 6.3-inch minimum focusing distance, offers a wider field of view for capturing more background. The lens weighs 8.4 oz. even with Sony’s ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass. Low dispersion glass compensate for  chromatic aberration at close focus with less glare and ghosting. Finally, Sony claims the lens is also dust and moisture resistant.

Pricing and Availability

The FE 50mm F2.8 Macro lens will ship in September for about $500 US. Amazon doesn’t list the new Macro lens yet, but we’ll update the post when it does.
