Photographer Sues Getty for Her Own Photos

Filed under WUT? ….the story from Hyperallergic is photographer Carol M. Highsmith is suing Getty for the rights to use her own photos. Earlier this year, Highsmith received a demand letter from Getty Images for featuring one of her photographs on her website. She had donated the photo in a larger collection to the Library of Congress. You’ve probably seen some of her photos, like this one.

Highsmith has since sued Getty claiming $1 billion copyright infringement suit against both Alamy and Getty for “gross misuse” her photographs. The Hyperallergic article doesn’t indicate why or how Getty came into possession of the photograph or Highsmith’s collection.

The image in question, featured in this post, is available with no-rights restrictions from the LOC.
