The FX2 compact cinema camera launched yesterday. I was on a photo shoot all day and am just catching up now. The latest addition to the Cinema Line is a powerful hybrid camera built for today’s content creators. It blends cinematic quality with versatility for creatives and their endeavors. My colleagues at Imaging Resource will have a full review soon enough. For now, here are the highlights.
A Sensor Built for Storytelling
At its core, the FX2 packs a 33-megapixel, back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor—the same chip found in the popular A7 IV and A7C. With over 15 stops of dynamic range in S-Log3, dual base ISOs of 4000 and 8000, and a top-end pushable ISO of 102,400, the FX2 promises rich detail in shadows, creamy highlights, and exceptional low-light performance. Whether you’re capturing nuanced interior scenes or silhouette-filled cityscapes, this sensor keeps your storytelling options wide open. It’s similar to the ZV-E10 II.

Cinema-Grade Video, All Day Long
Sony didn’t skimp on video chops: 4K/60p recording is possible for up to 13 hours straight, thanks to an internal cooling fan and efficient heat management. And for smooth slo-mo, you’ve got 120 fps in Full HD. Shoot in 4:2:2 10-bit with Cine EI, Cine EI Quick, or Flexible ISO workflows—or keep it simple with the default S-Cinetone profile for that filmic color straight out of the camera. Professionals will appreciate the XAVC S-I DCI 4K 24p option and the ability to load up to 16 custom LUTs for real-time color monitoring.
Hybrid Shooters Rejoice: Stills + Cinema
Flip the Movie/Still switch, and the FX2 transforms into a high-resolution 33 MP stills camera, with UI, menus, and workflow customized on the fly. A tiltable 3.68-million-dot EVF and a 3-inch vari-angle touchscreen give you flexible monitoring, while the new “BIG6” home screen puts your most-used settings—FPS, ISO, shutter, LUTs, white balance, ND filters—at your fingertips. Vertical-shooting UI and robust accessibility features (screen reader, menu magnification, tactile buttons) ensure no creator is left behind.
Rugged Design & Pro-Level Audio
Weighing just 1.5 lb and retaining the FX3’s flat-top form, the FX2 offers three ¼-20 mounting points right on the body—no cage needed for many setups. Add Sony’s optional XLR handle for dual pro-grade XLR/TRS inputs, a stereo mic jack, and hardware controls. Connectivity is exhaustive: HDMI Type-A outputs 4K 60p 4:2:2 10-bit and 16-bit RAW; USB-C handles 10 Gbps transfers and power delivery; and built-in wired or wireless streaming makes the FX2 a live-production powerhouse.
Autofocus & Stabilization: Solo-Op Magic
Sony’s Real-time Recognition AF steps up, using AI to lock on to humans, animals, birds, vehicles—even insects—and track them flawlessly, even in motion or low light. Combine focus-breathing compensation, customizable AF transition speeds, and AF Assist for true cinematic rack focus. On the stabilization front, Active Mode plus the new Dynamic Active Mode reduce shake for handheld shooters—no gimbal required. For those working without a dedicated operator, Auto Framing and Framing Stabilizer keep your subject perfectly placed in frame.
